JOHN R. SEAL, MD AWARD

John R. Seal, MD was a great military medical pioneer and a major contributor to The Society of Medical Consultants to the Armed Forces.  In 1985, Dr. Seal's family endowed SMCAF with funds to perpetuate the annual presentation of "The John R. Seal, MD Award" to a SMCAF member.  The Society officers select the recipient each year.  Dr. Seal's family hopes that we choose for this award military physicians, who by their military careers or by their contributions to SMCAF, embody the finest traditions of Military Medicine.  The list of recipients of the John R. Seal, MD Award numbers many of our nation's greatest military physicians.

The John R. Seal Award recognizes outstanding contributions to military medicine through research, patient care, and service to the Surgeons General, and/or through active participation in the affairs of the Society.  Dr. Seal, for whom the award was named, epitomized all of these attributes.  He had an illustrious career including groundbreaking research in infection diseases and treatment of bacterial diseases with antibiotics while serving in the United States Navy.

His Naval assignments culminated in his post as commanding officer of the Naval Medical Research Institute (NAMRI), until his retirement in 1962.  He continued his valuable work as a civilian at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) where ultimately he was appointed to oversee all prevention research programs in NIH.  Doctor Seal received many awards and much recognition for his creative ideas in Science and Medicine.  Included in these awards are the Founder’s Medal of AMSUS on two occasions, the Commendation Medal of the Secretary of the Navy, and the Department’s Distinguished Service Award.  Doctor Seal was an active leader in SMCAF activities, as a council member, as Vice President, and as the President, 1978-79.
